Cell phone with a big red circle in front of it

Corpus Christi ISD is aware that legislation passed by the 89th Texas Legislature includes Texas House Bill 1481, which prohibits student cellphone use (or other electronic, personal communication devices outside of district-issued devices) during the school day.

Detailed information about the bill is available on the Texas Legislature’s website.

District officials continue to study the new legislation and will draft and recommend a policy for adoption by the Board of Trustees as part of the July 28 regular meeting agenda to ensure the district is following the law.

During the previous school year, students in grades PK-8 were required to keep personal devices turned off and put away throughout the school day. Students in grades 9-12 were permitted to use devices between classes and during lunch.

“We had overwhelmingly positive feedback regarding our updated cellphone rules for the 2024-2025 school year,” said Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez. “While we understand the new legislation may necessitate further habit changes by our students and families, we appreciate the Legislature’s desire to support schools in keeping the school day a focused learning environment.”

The district will continue to share information and updates with our community as it becomes available.

CCISD looks forward to welcoming students to a new school year, which begins Monday, Aug. 11.
